Your data is stored in your browser — not online

If you clear your browser data, use a different browser, or switch devices, your NETWHAT data will be gone forever unless you have a backup. Please read this page carefully.

🗄️ How your data is stored

NETWHAT stores everything — your holdings, categories, snapshots, and settings — in your browser's localStorage. Think of it like a notebook that lives inside your browser on your device.

This means your financial data never leaves your device and is never uploaded to any server. Great for privacy — but it also means you are responsible for keeping backups.

💾 How to back up your data

There are two ways to back up:

1. Automatic — save a monthly snapshot
Every time you hit "Save snapshot" in the Assets or Liabilities tab, NETWHAT automatically downloads a backup file named something like networth_backup_2026-05.json. Save these files somewhere safe — a folder on your computer, Google Drive, iCloud, or a USB stick.

2. Manual — export anytime
Click Settings in the top right, then Export data (JSON) to download a full backup at any time. Do this regularly, especially before clearing your browser.

♻️ How to restore from a backup

If you lose your data, restoring it is simple:

Step 1 — Open NETWHAT in your browser
Step 2 — Click the Settings button in the top right of the page
Step 3 — Click Import data
Step 4 — Select your most recent .json backup file
Step 5 — Everything will be restored exactly as it was

Always keep your most recent backup file somewhere you can easily find it.

🚨 Things that will erase your data

Watch out for these — always export a backup first:

✕ Clearing browser history or site data in your browser settings
✕ Using "Private / Incognito" mode (data doesn't persist)
✕ Opening NETWHAT in a different browser (each browser has its own storage)
✕ Switching to a new device or reinstalling your OS
✕ Using the "Clear all data" button in Settings

✅ Best practices

✓ Save a snapshot every month — it backs up automatically
✓ Keep your backup files in a cloud folder (iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox) so they're safe even if you lose your device
✓ Always use the same browser on the same device for consistency
✓ Export a manual backup before clearing your browser or switching devices
✓ Change your browser's default download folder to a dedicated backup folder so files land in the right place automatically

🔐 How the password lock works

The password lock prevents NETWHAT from loading without the correct password in your browser. It is useful for stopping someone from casually opening the app on your device.

✓What it protects against — someone picking up your unlocked phone or laptop and opening NETWHAT

✓How the password is stored — hashed locally using the browser's Web Crypto API. Never stored as plain text, never transmitted anywhere

✕What it does not protect against — anyone with physical access and technical knowledge can open DevTools and read your data from localStorage directly, bypassing the lock

✕Remote access or malware — if your device is compromised, the password lock offers no protection

→Recommendation — use alongside your device's screen lock for meaningful everyday protection

🔒 Is my data private?

Yes — completely. Your financial data never leaves your device. The only things NETWHAT sends to the internet are:

→ Requests for live prices (stock tickers, crypto coin IDs, gold/silver)
→ Requests for exchange rates (GBP/USD/AUD/EUR)

These requests contain no personal information — just the ticker symbols or currency codes needed to fetch a price. Your holdings, values, and net worth are never transmitted.

🔑 Your API keys

Your API keys (Twelve Data, CoinGecko) are stored in localStorage alongside your data. They are included in your backup files. If you share a backup file with someone else, remove your API keys from Settings first, or be aware they will have access to your keys.

Your backup files are plain JSON — you can open them in any text editor to see exactly what is stored.

NETWHAT From Z ("we", "the app") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains how NETWHAT handles your information.

Data we collect
NETWHAT does not collect, store or transmit any personal data. All financial data you enter — including assets, liabilities, expenses and snapshots — is stored exclusively in your browser's localStorage on your own device. It never leaves your device.

Third party services
NETWHAT uses the following third party APIs to fetch live market prices. These requests contain only public ticker symbols and no personal information:
— CoinGecko (crypto prices)
— Twelve Data (stock, ETF and gold prices)
— Gold-API.com (silver prices)
— Frankfurter API (currency exchange rates)
These requests are routed through a Netlify serverless function acting as a CORS proxy. This proxy does not log or store any data.

API keys
If you choose to enter API keys in Settings, these are stored only in your browser's localStorage and transmitted to third party APIs solely to authenticate price requests. We never have access to your API keys.

Cookies and tracking
NETWHAT does not use cookies, analytics, tracking pixels or any form of user monitoring. We have no visibility into how you use the app.

Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be noted in the What's New notice within the app.

Not financial advice
NETWHAT is a personal finance tracking tool only. Nothing within the app constitutes financial, investment, tax or legal advice. All financial decisions are made solely at your own risk. We accept no liability for any decisions made based on data displayed by the app.

Data responsibility
Your data is stored locally in your browser. You are solely responsible for backing up your data regularly using the Export function in Settings. We cannot recover lost data.

Price accuracy
Live prices are sourced from third party APIs and may be delayed, inaccurate or unavailable. We make no guarantees about the accuracy or availability of price data.

Password security
The optional password lock is a screen lock only and does not encrypt your data. You are responsible for the security of your device and browser.

Availability
We aim to keep NETWHAT available but make no guarantees of uptime or continued availability. The service may be changed, paused or discontinued at any time.

Intellectual property
NETWHAT, its name, logo and source code are the intellectual property of NETWHAT From Z. All rights reserved.

Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. Continued use of the app constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

Gold fetches via your Twelve Data key (XAU/USD). Silver fetches via gold-api.com — free, no key needed. Both return troy oz spot prices. 1 troy oz = 31.1035g.

Data storage

All data is saved in your browser's localStorage — never sent anywhere. Export regularly as a backup.
